Candlelight is a global event series from FeverUp.com and I’m thrilled to be their photographer in San Diego. The basic concept is simple: candles and a concert at a beautiful venue. My role is often a combination to architecture photography, concert photography and event photography. Last weekend we captured a tribute to famous Tejano singer Juan Gabriel. The venue was like none other in San Diego: the Abbey on Fifth.
Breathtaking Architecture
With stained glass everywhere you look including several domed skylights, plus tall ceilings and archways, dark polished redwood, curves, pillars and ornate columns… this is a very special venue. The Abbey on Fifth dates back to 1910! It’s the only Classic Revival structure still in standing in San Diego. Even better: it is officially in the National Register of Historic Places.
A Tribute to Juan Gabriel…
“Enjoy some of the best songs from Juan Gabriel surrounded by the gentle glow of candlelight. Get lost in the sounds of the talented Adelaide Band as they bring sounds of Mexico to San Diego. With this concert’s sublime performance and stunning atmosphere, sit back and get taken into the clouds.”
Singer Adelaide Pilar and her band of seasoned professionals stoked the crowd to their feet and got the whole place singing and dancing. After the set, chants of “otra! otra!” prompted three encores. This was hands down the most lively concert event in the series so far. And this is the first time we’ve ever seen a singer pick up a trumpet and absolutely wail!
Be sure to catch a Candlelight Concert from FeverUp.com. And check out Adelaide on Instagram and YouTube.
Architecture Photography… at a concert?
Our job was mostly to capture the stunning venue, but we couldn’t not shoot the incredible band. Here’s a glimpse of this wonderful historic building. You can see the full gallery, with a focus on concert photography, at BPM Live Sessions.com
