I shot, edited and directed this live music video for A Mayfield Affair, a San Diego based folk rock band.
My concept was simple: showcase the band’s true, undoctored sound. No recording studio trickery, no distracting story-line, no acting. We did this video in one continuous take.
The audio was done with a multi-microphone setup that ran into a mixer then was recorded live in stereo into a handheld Sony field recorder. The only post-production effect was a little audio compression. It’s better to be safe than sorry on a video shoot, so I had a backup plan: a Zoom H2 field recorder placed very close to the guys, just off camera. Luckily the multi-mic audio came out great.
As a life-long musician, I love working on music videos. Especially the kind that don’t rely on amateur acting and convoluted story lines. Musicians play music. Actors act. Comedians do comedy. While many of us think we can blur those lines, it often comes off all wrong. So if you’d like an intimate, raw music video of your own that shows your talent as a musician, let’s talk.
