I filmed these videos over three days at various locations around the client’s office, including the building lobby, cafe and exterior. I served as Director of Photography for the interviews and cinematic b-roll shots, and also as Audio Mixer for the interviews. We had one other crew member operating another camera for the interviews. An important factor for the success of these videos is that we had a producer with strong ties to the company and knowledge of the subject matter to help facilitate the interviews and craft the story. With the producer asking the interview questions and making sure we got all the necessary content covered, I was able to focus on capturing the best possible images and audio. In the end, we delivered a level of quality that surpassed the budget of approximately $8,000 for the 3-day shoot including the crew and a large amount of professional equipment.

B-Roll is a hugely important part of any video. It helps set the tone, strengthens the messages and emotions captured in the interviews, and creates a deeper connection between your viewer and the people on screen. I shot all of the b-roll similar to how indie movies are filmed. I had each “character” stand in certain spots or walk across at certain times – called “blocking”. In order to keep the experience feeling good for the non-actors, I gathered all of my angles in one or two takes, quickly making my adjustments and collecting shots. Regular people don’t usually feel comfortable on camera, but working quickly, staying positive and effectively communicating with the “cast” helped make this shoot a big success.
